RALEIGH, N.C. — The delight of a warm and sunny holiday weekend gave way Monday to much cooler temperatures and a steady rain.

Showers began before dawn Monday, leaving roads wet and slick for the return to work.

Sunday’s high temperature reached 74 degrees which with just three degrees below the record set in 2001. Temperatures on Monday morning will be in the 40s and 50s, and cloud cover will hold them to about 50 degrees for the Monday high.

“It’s a bit of a shock to the system as we head back to work and school,” WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said.

A cold front slides through the southern half of North Carolina Monday and may stall before exiting the state. This means there could be a wide temperature spread from north to south across the area. Some regions in the north could be in the 40s all day while southeast sections of the coastal plain could be around 60 degrees.

No matter the temperature, just about everyone in central North Carolina will see a dreary Monday and have a chance to get wet, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

The clouds and the chance for sprinkles stay in the forecast into Wednesday, and there is a chance for showers Tuesday evening when WRAL lights the transmission tower, an annual holiday event.

After that, the skies will clear, but temperatures stay in the mid-50s with chilly nights through the weekend.
