Raeford man drowns in Hoke fishing pond

Posted January 16, 2014

— A Raeford man drowned Wednesday while fishing in a local pond, authorities said.

John Mims, 58, was in a small boat with Calvin Ely on a pond at 1275 South Bethel Road when Mims caught a fish and stood up to retrieve it, authorities said. Mims fell into the pond, and Ely dove in after him but was unable to rescue him.

Ely swam to shore and went to several different locations trying to get rescue personnel to the pond. Divers were able to find Mims' body shortly after arriving, authorities said.

What a shame. I guess at least he died doing something he enjoyed.
