— WCMC-FM will change its format this fall from country music to sports-talk.

The station, which has been known as 99.9 Genuine Country, picked up the radio rights to Carolina Hurricanes games in June.

Officials with station owner Capitol Broadcasting Co., said the move is part of an effort to consolidate Capitol's sports interests. Sister station WRAL-FM also recently picked up the radio rights to North Carolina State University football and basketball games.

WCMC will become part of Capitol's sports division, which also includes the Durham Bulls baseball team. The station's studio will eventually move to WRAL-TV so television, radio and online sports coverage are located together, officials said.

Are You crazy ? What is wrong with you people . You have the best country station around and the only "real" country station in the area.Sports is everywhere and talk is cheap. so much for my pre-sets .Everything I like someone messes up.

Why can't the Raleigh market have a classic country station?

I am a QDR listener.... BUT The Rooster(106.1) is more variety of country old/new... as for rock, 96.1 jams!!!!!!!!

That is a really good country station, and a shame to see it go. But I don't think right now there is anything like the sports talk format on FM that we are able to reach here, only WPTF (AM), and that's not all sports. It makes sense for this area to have that, considering all the local teams we have.

this radio station hasn't been playing country music that long right, like 1 1/2 years maybe?? Almost sounds like Curtis Media Group who owns 94.7 WQDR shut them down because they were both competing in this area to be the best country station...ofcourse 94.7 would whoop em. (haha) They are much more established and the sports station conversion could be good for WCMC b/c they would be one of very few FM sports talk radio stations...not sure if there is one around here but it might be good for them. Time will tell...

I agree with eac416, 99.9 is the best country station around, far better than WQDR. 99.9 plays more 'old' country than WQDR. They had a good thing going the way it is!!!

Nature boy you are right about the signal from Primetime with the Packman. I just hope someday soon, and maybe the time is now that he will get an FM station to carry the show. I love it and have been a regular listener for years.

I do listen to Packman on 620 on the ride home, but the signal fades before I get home. It always fades right when the whiner line comes on, too. I hate that. That's my favorite part of the show, especially if the Git Some guy calls. But I don't listen to any of the other local sports shows on 620 or 850. I heard David Glenn was good, but that's it.

Today's radio has added a new level to the term 'commercial radio'.
