Ack! It's Valentine's Day. And for a number of reasons, I am far from prepared for the big day other than helping my kids get all their valentines squared away for their classmates and teachers. I'm guessing that I'm not alone.
Faye, the WRAL Smart Shopper, offered some great ideas for keeping Valentine's Day frugal and memorable.{{/a}} to read all about it. After a few attempts at dinner out on Valentine's Day, I definitely second her recommendation to eat at home.
And Genny Upton, our crafty mom, offered this fun activity for {{a href="blogpost-12035904"}}play dough chocolates.
I expect I'll be getting a little crafty and inventive this evening as I search my house for ways to mark the day for my kids other than lots of hugs and kisses. Here are my plans for creating a fun day:
- Making homemade heart tarts, using this recipe that Susan Caldwell of Lil' Chef shared last year.
- Serving up some rich, homemade hot chocolate, using this recipe that Holly Taylor of Pullen Place shared.
- Cutting heart-shaped sugar cookies using food writer Mark Bittman's recipe for frosted cookies (just rolling out the dough and cutting out shapes with it) and decorating them with my kids. Oh ... and eating a bunch.
So, in other words, Valentine's Day will be short, simple and very sweet at my house. And, I think, that's exactly the way it should be.
