Q&A: John Arthur Greene, star of N.C. Theatre's Grease, talks craft, inspiration, fast food

Greene, a Garner native, has been in "Matilda" on Broadway; played a role in NBC's "Peter Pan Live" in 2014; and, most recently, was seen on American Idol. It all started here in Raleigh. As a young performer, Greene participated in N.C. Theatre's Kids on Broadway program, now called the N.C. Theatre Conservatory, which offers a slate of classes, workshops and camps for aspiring performers.

Go Ask Mom: You grew up in Garner and attended Enloe High School and now have had some amazing gigs on Broadway and TV. What experiences here in the Triangle and through the N.C. Theatre helped get you to where you are today?

John Arthur Greene: NC Theatre gave me a platform to develop my craft, teaching me all of the ins and outs of performance on and off the stage. I was able to learn the meaning of stillness and the importance of a whisper. Also challenged and stretched as an actor, singer and dancer

GAM: You had a role in NBC's Peter Pan Live! in 2014. My family loved it!! What was that experience like and how is it different from your experience on Broadway?

JAG: TV is completely different than Broadway. Timing, process, all of the above. The most beautiful thing about TV is you have so much time to rehearse and really find the moments and arch of your character.

GAM: You're starring in N.C. Theatre's Grease. What do you love about playing Danny Zuko?

JAG: Danny is amazing because he is trying to find himself. We all go through a time in our lives when we put on masks to be something we are not. But in the end he finds out that he is enough.

GAM: When you get back to the Triangle is there a restaurant, park, other place that you always have to visit?

JAG: Bojangles and Chick-fil-A

GAM: For the "stage" moms and dads out there, who are carting their kids around to auditions and rehearsals, what advice do you have for them? And what advice do you share with kids who dream of following in your footsteps?

JAG: Parents! Listen to your kids! Provide every outlet for your children to grow. Allow them to make mistakes and guide them as best you can without micro managing.
