The Raleigh destination, more popular than ever after reopening a couple of years ago after a major renovation, is one of 13 finalists in the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association's Great Main Street and Great Public Places Contest.

The public nominated favorite main streets and public places in March. A panel of nine expert judges narrowed the list. Now, residents can vote for their top picks through May 9.

Pullen Park is one of seven finalists for favorite public places. Also in the running: Town Common, Tarboro, Edgecombe County; Town Square, Burnsville, Yancey County; Bridge Park, Sylva, Jackson County; Little Sugar Creek Greenway, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County; Downtown Waterfront Boardwalk, Manteo, Dare County; and Wrenn Miller Park, Jamestown, Guilford County.

In the Great Main Streets category is Main Street, Benson, Johnston County; East and West Union Street, Morganton, Burke County; King Street, Boone, Watauga County; Main Street, Gastonia, Gaston County; Main Street, Mooresville, Iredell County; and North Davidson Street, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County.

The winner in each category will be recognized as the "People's Choice." The expert panel also will pick winners in a "professionals" category.

Residents can get more information and vote on the Great Places NC website.
