CARY, N.C. — Publix Super Markets will open a second store in Cary, the company announced Tuesday.

The company has entered an agreement to purchase two shuttered Lowes Foods Stores in North Carolina – one in Gastonia and the other in Cary in Mill Pond Village, at Kildaire Farm and Ten Ten roads.

The first Publix in Cary opened in October at Davis Drive and High House Road.

“We’ve opened eight stores in North Carolina within the past year, solidifying our commitment to growth within the state,” Publix CEO Ed Crenshaw said in a statement. “Our service-oriented culture is continuing to foster a loyal customer following in North Carolina and across all our market areas.”

Publix is privately owned with 1,098 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and the Carolinas. The company posted $30.6 billion in sales in 2014.

Lowes Foods President Tim Lowe said the sale of the closed stores is part of a “comprehensive growth strategy that includes accelerating investment in rebranding existing stores, building new stores and evaluating strategic marketplace opportunities.
