PTA president at Fayetteville school faces embezzlement charges

Posted May 11, 2012

— Cumberland County investigators arrested the president of a local PTA on Friday and charged her with stealing from the school group.

Brandy Marie Jones, 30, of 1757 Arrow Ridge Way, was charged with three counts of embezzlement. She was released on a $7,500 unsecured bond.

Authorities said Jones, who heads the Brentwood Elementary School PTA, wrote three checks on the group's account to her fiancé. The checks, which totaled more than $3,000, were written on Dec, 5, Dec. 7 and March 31, authorities said.

The PTA money had been earmarked for a snow-cone machine and other items to be used for school functions, authorities said. An investigation began after bank officials told the PTA that its account was overdrawn by more than $300, authorities said.

She has failed the kids and her community. They should have checked her out before they gave her a checkbook. I bet she was perceived as a pilar of the community before she got her mugshot. Now she is a common thief just like all the others in "Slammer" Magazine!!

I thought they did back ground check on all school employees? charmcclainlovesdogs2

PTA pres is not a school employee - it's a parent volunteer. Each school PTA should be careful, but PTAs are not managed by the schools - they are managed by parents.

And yeah, it should be 2 parties to sign checks, with a 3rd party looking at the bank statements at least once a quarter.

Someone recently tried to say that PTAs were the best way for parents to get money into their local school. Aside from the equal opportunity for all kids angle, this story (and dozens like it) are the main reason why not to put significant amounts of money into PTAs.

She isn't a school employee. PTA is parent volunteers and they elect their board officers.

people like this are a part of the reason people don't want to volunteer for these pta positions at their childs school. I once volunteered for pta treasurer-and because some dishonest person did the sam thing as this lady, the amount of checks, cross checks, outside audits etc made a volunteer position more hassle then a full time paid position. If you can't be honest and work for the children, then stay away from these organizations and give us all a break!

Its becoming a shame when you cannot trust "certain" adults in their children's schools. How embrassing is that for the students.

I thought they did back ground check on all school employees? Of course temptation is always there and some like her will go for it and then they are caught to face the dire consequences. Next time the school should be very careful in who handles their money and checks. It should be a two party that signs the checks.

At my daughter's PTA in Raleigh, only the Treasurer can write checks and the checks require the signature of the President and the Vice President.
