We have a few events this Mother's Day season that take a unique spin on the traditional breakfast in bed approach to celebrating.

I'm all about mixing it up. So I thought I'd call attention to these three fun events.

Here goes:

Listen to Your Mother, an evening of live readings, is 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Kenan Auditorium on the campus of William Peace University. Tickets are $15 and help support SAFEchild, which I've been writing a bit about. The show features local writers and their musings on motherhood. It promises to be a funny and thoughtful evening.

Run Like a Mother, a 5K at the Kerr Family YMCA in north Raleigh's Wakefield, is Mother's Day morning. (That's May 12). There's the 5K, one-mile fun run for kids and a post-race party with with activities for kids and more. That sounds like a great way to burn some calories before indulging in a Mother's Day feast.

And, finally, The Mom Prom is 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., May 18, at the Millroom at The Factory in Wake Forest. Tickets are $35 and get you dinner, drinks and dancing. This is a ladies night out event for charity with a silent auction and raffle. This also is your chance to pull out one of those ugly bridesmaid dresses from your closet! There will be a crowning of a prom queen and tackiest dress winner. Sounds like fun! The website is worth checking out just for the pictures alone!

Happy Mother's Day!
