RALEIGH, N.C. — Benjamin Martin was juggling school and work when he decided to change his career path.
He joined civil engineering firm McKim & Creed's on-the-job training program, which is part of a state effort to help workers earn money while learning new skills. The state reimburses employers up to 75 percent of an employee's wages during the training period.

“I'm not really in the financial situation to go to school, so it really helped me out,” Martin said.

Twenty-four Wake County businesses participated in the program last year, which is run through the NCWorks office in Raleigh, and more than 130 people learned what they needed to fill skilled positions.

McKim & Creed Vice President Phyllis Elikai said the program is helpful for both the employees and the company.

“We have a highly skilled workforce,” Elikai said. “What we do is very technically oriented, and not everyone has that skill that we need. We saw it as an opportunity to help them get back into the work force.”

Martin's training ends next month, but he says he's in his new career for the long haul. He wants to be a project manager.

“(I want to) keep learning, keep growing in pursuing this career and working my way up the ladder, you know,” he said.
