Program offers incentives for employers willing to train new workers
Benjamin Martin was juggling school and work when he decided to change his career path. He joined McKim & Creed's on-the-job training program, which is part of a state effort to help workers earn money while learning new skills.
Posted — Updated“I'm not really in the financial situation to go to school, so it really helped me out,” Martin said.
McKim & Creed Vice President Phyllis Elikai said the program is helpful for both the employees and the company.
“We have a highly skilled workforce,” Elikai said. “What we do is very technically oriented, and not everyone has that skill that we need. We saw it as an opportunity to help them get back into the work force.”
Martin's training ends next month, but he says he's in his new career for the long haul. He wants to be a project manager.
“(I want to) keep learning, keep growing in pursuing this career and working my way up the ladder, you know,” he said.
