RALEIGH, N.C. — Almost 100,000 students were enrolled in private schools across North Carolina, setting a new record, according to the state Division of Non-Public Education.

The 97,656 students enrolled in kindergarten through grade 12 in private schools topped the 94,785 enrolled in 2006-07, a new state report said.

Counties with the highest enrollments were Mecklenburg, with 19,502 students; Wake, with 14,696 students; and Guilford, with 7,122 students.

Statewide, 683 private schools operated last year, up from 671 the previous year. Almost three-fourths of the private schools are religious schools, and they enrolled about 71 percent of the students, the report said.
