Prison's excessive-force probe prompts reassignments, termination
Two administrators at Polk Correctional Institution in Butner have been reassigned, and a corrections officer has been terminated amid an investigation into excessive force at the prison, officials said Friday.
Posted — UpdatedCorrections Secretary Alvin Keller said the allegation of excessive force on an inmate was made this week, and he immediately reassigned the prison administrator and assistant superintendent for custody and operations. Randy Lee, the retired administrator of Caledonia Correctional Institution, was named interim administrator at Polk.
"Adherence to established policies and procedure is critical to operating safe and secure prisons, and I will not tolerate those who violate those procedures," Keller said in a statement.
The Department of Correction is investigating the allegation, and Keller said appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if the probe determines policies and procedures were violated.
Polk houses offenders ages 19 to 21, as well as inmates who participate in job assignments. It opened in 1997 to replace a youthful offender unit on Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh.
