Gnome house at Prairie Ridge Ecostation

Prairie Ridge Ecostation in west Raleigh has some special events coming up. The 45-acre spot is part of the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences. It's a great place to explore with kids. Don't miss the nature play area with the small fossil dig and gnome home building area.

Here's what's scheduled:

Walk through the Seasons is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Feb. 12, Feb. 26, March 12 and March 26. Preregistration is required. All ages are welcome. Kids 15 years and younger must be with a registered adult. It's free.

The event takes you on a one mile walk with a museum naturalist. The trails are natural so off-road strollers are a good idea.

And Science on Your Smartphone is 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Feb. 16. The free program is for kids ages 12 and up. Kids who are 15 years and younger must be with a registered adult. Pre-registration is required.

Participants will learn about apps for iPhones and Androids that allow users to be part of citizen science projects. Bring your smartphone for the event, which includes a leisurely walk outside.
