RALEIGH, N.C. — A powerful cold front moving across the state is expected to arrive in the Triangle by 4 a.m. Wednesday, bringing strong to severe thunderstorms to the morning commute.

"Give yourself some extra time to get to work or school tomorrow," WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said.

The system has generated deadly severe weather in parts of the Midwest and South, and caused tornado watches and warnings in parts of Georgia early Tuesday. Several western North Carolina counties are under a tornado watch until 1 a.m. Wednesday as storms move through the region.

"It's important to note that the conditions that led to the destructive storms out west will not be the conditions here when the storm arrives tomorrow morning," Fishel said Tuesday night. "We'll still keep an eye out for it but we think it won't be that bad."

Because the system will move into the Triangle overnight, it won't be fueled by the heat, thus creating more unstable air, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.

The storms have a low chance of causing tornadoes or resulting in wind or hail damage, but there is a high chance for flooding, Maze said.

Wednesday's high is expected to reach 73 degrees.

The rain will clear out of the Triangle by early Wednesday evening, giving way to beautiful weather in the second half of the work week and the first few days of the 2014 N.C. State Fair, which runs Oct. 16-26.

"There will be gorgeous weather for the opening of the fair on Thursday," Maze said.

Highs Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be in the low to mid-70s under partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies. Overnight lows will be in the upper 40s and low 50s.
