Power outage causes problems at North Carolina airport

Posted August 29

— Fallen power lines led to problems at a North Carolina airport and left more than 100 surrounding businesses in the dark.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports Duke Energy spokesman Dave Scanzoni said power lines fell across the Interstate 73/Interstate 40 corridor at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, knocking out power to Piedmont Triad International Airport and 130 businesses. The highway was also closed.

Scanzoni said it's not clear what brought the lines down. Work crews determined it was an equipment problem.

Power was restored at the airport around four hours later. Around 11:15 a.m., the affected businesses got their power back.

PTI Executive Director Kevin Baker said the airport used emergency generators, and while most airlines got their flights out, the outage did impact travel, especially for American Airlines customers.
