Portion of Bragg Boulevard in Fayetteville to close for one month

The eastbound lane will be closed while the westbound lane will remain open. Engineers said it's the safest way to replace the deep line.

Engineers have run into a snag building two sections of a culvert that forces them to close a section of road for a month.

"So right now, they're going to begin Phase I of the culvert," state Department of Transportation Project Engineer Jason Salisbury said. "But in order to begin Phase II, which is the next section of it, we have to replace a sewer line that currently goes across this channel, which is in conflict with our proposed Phase II of the culvert."

Drivers should follow the signed detour and be prepared for a longer travel time.

"It's about 8 feet deep currently," Salisbury said. "So, we're going to replace in kind what's there and just reroute it up Rowan Street from West Rowan Street."

Instead of replacing the 60-year-old bridge with a new one, the city has decided to build two separate bridges over the train tracks that will go under the road.

Those working on the road have brought in more than 80,000 cubic yards of dirt to take the traffic over the tracks, and more dirt is on the way.

Once the project is complete, the hope is that the traffic flow along Bragg Boulevard or turning onto Murchison Road will be smoother.
