Popular Carrboro Mural Painted Over

Posted May 25, 2007

— A popular work of art has mysteriously turned into a blank slate.

A mural depicting the eclectic community was featured on a wall on the side of the Jade Palace restaurant in Carrboro.

Police said three men told them a man came up to them outside the homeless shelter and said he would pay them to paint it.

The three men painted the mural, but the man did not make good on his promise. Police cannot find the individual.

The mural was painted years ago as a benefit for a local charity.

Those poor carrboro/chapelhill pinko commies. What a shame.

Not out there to see it, but I bet it looks a lot better. Worth a flight out there to celebrate this change.

    OMG, what a shame.

I'm sure the po po saw them painting the wall, but didn't think anything of it. I wouldn't if I was walking by. I would have thought they were going to do a new mural or something and were laying a background coat of paint.

Wow- all the hate for Chapel Hill and Carrboro? Why? What did they do to you?

It is worth noting that the wall that was painted over is facing the police station and all the police cars are parked in a line a foot away from that wall.

I think this was great. Now I don't have to look at "Feed the Taliban" that was painted as part of the mural.

SRSD, while I agree that it is a shame that this happened, in the grand scheme of life it's simply a wall with some paint. I know you will say that it stands for something and it means something, and that's fine. But it's a wall, with paint. Grow a sense of humor.

At first, I thought this comments section would be a fascinating way to find out what other readers of the news thought about world and local events. Turns out it's really just a forum for mean-spirited people to slam other people, and for dullards who think they're funny to tell unfunny jokes. Turns your stomach. Truly, somebody destroyed a lovely land-mark while at the same time cheating three people who were clearly trying to work for their days wage. If they find him, I hope he's made to pay for a new mural as well as pay the wages of the three homeless people.

I hate it when that happens.

Maybe he just wanted to see the men work for the change they are given.
