ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Roanoke Rapids police on Wednesday released surveillance photos of a man and woman believed to be involved in the attempted armed robbery of a gas station on March 21.

Police said that a masked man wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt pointed a black handgun at a cashier at the Shell gas station at 15 Roanoke Ave. He demanded money, but the cashier couldn't open the drawer fast enough.

The gunman then pulled the trigger three times, but the gun didn't fire, police said. He left without getting any money and fled in a champagne-colored Kia Sportage, probably a 2009 model, police said.

Police said the would-be robber was helped by a woman who drove the getaway car and checked out the store about 50 minutes before the robbery attempt.

Police said they are investigating the incident as a case of attempted murder and armed robbery.

Anyone with information about the identity of the man and woman should call Roanoke Rapids police at 919-583-2488.
