Police: Woman stole from Meals on Wheels

Posted July 8, 2010

— An employee of Meals on Wheels of Wake County was charged Wednesday with embezzling money from the aid agency.

Lea Lindsay, 42, of 6522 Old Fairground Road in Benson, was charged with embezzling $16,338 from Meals on Wheels between July 2007 and June 2008, according to an arrest warrant. She was released on a $10,000 bond.

Lindsay has resigned her position with Meals on Wheels and is cooperating with the investigation, said her attorney, Patrick Roberts. She plans to make full restitution to the agency and hopes to have the case resolved soon, he said.

TJHiggs68 wrote, "Makes me wonder what type of ill minded people are running these community based businesses." Like Enron's cooked books? The Exxon Valdez? BP? Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme? Nestle's continuing participation in the death of infants due to their marketing of baby formula?

Greed is greed, and thievery is inexcuseable. I would wager, were I a gambling woman, that much more money has been stolen and much more public trust has been abused by large corporations than by non-profits and other human services organizations. Please don't paint all with the same wide brush.

Your comment that she may be "ill-minded" jibed with my theory that some crimes such as this alleged one may be the result of addiction or other compulsions. That does not mean that people who commit crimes like these should have free rein of the coffers; let them pay back what they owe and work in places where they do not have the ability to steal while they recover.

This is wrong. There are elders & the ones that aren't able to take care of themselves that need food, & this is sick what this women did. They need to give her a serious sentence. I really hope they make an example out of her.

What does her political affiliation have to do with ANYTHING? For Pete Sakes people...grow up.

raggy, I don't know why this case took two years but I had an employee embezzle from me once and it took a long time (18 months or so) after we discovered it and stopped it for the police to build a case. I think it just takes a long time to track records and build a case. But you know, I really didn't care if it was a republican or a democrat that stole from me, I was more unhappy about the lossand betrayal part. I guess everyone has different prioritys.

I am a Meals on Wheels volunteer in Smithfield. I am not sure who is happier -- the folks I take a meal to or me for getting to do it! I would recommend any of you that can volunteer one hour even if it is only once a month to deliver Meals do it! It is a super project! NOW, THIS LOW LIFE WHO STOLE FROM THOSE WHO NEED IT THE MOST ------- Sorry, I will say nothing else as to what I think of her as it would not get past the WRAL censor!

After, she pays back the money, she should have to go to each person that receives meals and apologize .

Wow. You really can't get much lower than that. When I was a kid I had an elderly neighbor who basically survived on meals on wheels and meals that I brought over to her. She was quite frail and couldn't prepare stuff for herself. I saw some of those meals, and while they looked nutritious enough, they were pretty minimal and didn't look exactly delicious. It was sustenance provided on a shoestring budget by volunteers. To steal from that fine organization and dirty its name. How terrible and heartless.

Shadowwolf said "Was she a Democrat? You know they do believe in sharing that wealth these days!"

Mmmmmm. I am wondering did you read the story because you are way off. Nowhere in the story did it talk about her political beliefs. Anyway, What this lady done was such a disgrace. Hopefully justice is served.
