DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police were looking for a tractor-trailer Wednesday night that spilled diesel fuel after a hitting a car, then left the scene.

Officers said the tractor-trailer side-swiped the car around 10 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 40 near the Interstate 540 exit. The truck kept going and spilled diesel fuel on the road, causing another accident on the I-540 east ramp, officers said.

The driver of the car in the first accident was transported to Duke Hospital. The condition of the injured motorist is not yet known. The people in the second vehicle were not injured.

The state Department of Transportation was called to put sand on the ramp to absorb the spilled fuel.
