— Durham Crime Stoppers has offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of a man who stole a car Sunday with a 13-year-old boy inside.

The boy told police that he was listening to music inside his grandmother's car outside the Church of God in Jesus Christ, 815 Fargo St., around 2:30 p.m. A masked man pointed a gun at the boy, got inside the car and drove away.

The boy punched the man in the mouth and jumped out of the car while it was moving near Hope Valley and Cornwallis roads, police said. The boy suffered minor injuries but refused treatment by EMS.

Police are searching for the suspect and the stolen car. The car is a blue 2000 Toyota Camry, possibly with North Carolina license plate ZPL-5207.

The suspect was wearing a mask, black sweatshirt, blue jeans and red and white Nike sneakers.

Anyone with information on the stolen vehicle or the incident is asked to call police at 919-560-4415, extension 29312 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.

"Don't the police know if it was a NC plate or not?"

Yeah, but how do they know that plate "ZPL5207" is still on the car? If he was smart, and I'm guessing he's not, he would do a switcharoo with the plates of another blue 2000 Camry.

Possibly with NC license plate ZPL5207. Don't the police know if it was a NC plate or not? I guess being made in 200 they couldn't be sure.

A 13-year-old punches a masked man with a gun in the face? Wonder why the masked man even let him ride along? Did he keep the mask on while they were riding? If not, why wear the mask in the first place? If so, why would he risk wearing the mask in traffic?

13-year-old boy, alone in his grandma's car...doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out...and a masked bad man at that! I'll be surprised if this turns out true.

glad i'm not the only skeptic. My first thought was, wow, that's alot of detail for a 13 year old in duress to remember. Fishy.

Color me skeptical. I saw the story on WRAL when they interviewed this kid, something just doesn't add up. I would not be surprised if he wrecked/lost the car while Granny was in church and this was his cover story so he didn't get in trouble.

I would bet my bottom dollar the kid didn't 'punch him in the mouth'. I'm glad he got away, but I think he just jumped out and is trying to sound tough.

Why would he say that he hit the man if he did not? Besides does it really matter, he was able to get away, that it the important thing here.

    Hm. Something doesn't sound right.

Good for him! It is always nice to hear a story that could have been worse but those in danger were able to keep their heads and get away.
