— A Smithfield mother was charged with child abuse Monday after police say she abandoned her 7-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter overnight last week.

The children became locked out of the home, at 503 S. Fifth St., and had to sleep on the porch during a severe thunderstorm Thursday, police said. A neighbor found the children on the porch in the morning, brought them into her home and called police.

Denise Dyane Henderson, 45, was in the Johnston County jail Monday under a $10,000 bond. In addition to two counts of child abuse, she faces charges of open container and driving while license revoked.

Police said the children are staying with family members.

The Department of Social Services is investigating.

Obviously you read a lot and understand little. Now just what would have helped these kids get in a house. Think hard. You use one every day. DING DING DING. That's Right. A key.

WTSB radio website reports the following: "After getting off their school bus Wednesday afternoon, Smithfield Police allege the mother left her 7 year-old daughter and 11 year-old son at home telling them she was going to give someone a ride.

Police allege the mother did not return home until the next day. In the meanwhile, the children became accidentally locked outside their home, and had to sleep on the porch during a severe thunderstorm that moved through the area early Thursday morning."

Hopefully there won't be a next time, if she has done this once that we know of, odds are she will do it again

I would have called the police to take me home - anything to get to my kids.coras078 ---> that's exactly right. I just don't understand how she left them the whole night like that. You know those children were worried about their Mother. Why put them thru that? I'm glad she was charged. Maybe she'll think about it next time -

Thank God the neighbors found the kids! What in the world......if I didn't have a ride back to my home, I would have called the police to take me home - anything to get to my kids.

dwr1964 - The children were locked out of the home and slept on the porch while no adult was there to supervise. What other 'key' details are you looking for, dwr1964? That is abuse, plain and simple.
