Police seek pair in Clayton bank robbery

Posted May 18, 2011

— Police were searching Wednesday for two people who robbed a Clayton bank.

Two armed robbers entered the First Citizens Bank branch at 10702 U.S. Highway 70 Business at about 9:30 a.m. and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

No one was injured in the robbery.

The robbers were described as black men with light complexions. One was about 5-foot-10 with a stocky build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and armed with a rifle or shotgun. The other was about 6 feet tall with an average build, wearing a camouflage jacket and armed with a handgun. Both were wearing black ski masks.

They were last seen running toward the wooded area to the east of the bank, and police said they believe the men had a vehicle waiting nearby. Police said they wanted to talk to the driver or occupants of a burgundy 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora seen leaving the area shortly after the robbery.

If it had been necessary to "Lockdown" schools, it would've been done. Clearly we see in hindsight, that it was not necessary.

I agree with "luvmeezerstoo" to an extent. I live on the same street as the bank and heard about this from a landscaper who was doing work in the area before I heard anything on the news. After checking WRAL's site I was surprised to see the story so far below other things with no real information. As I write this helicopters are still flying over head. I checked on all my elderly neighbors because until this latest report there was no mention of a vehicle. I came home looking in closets and behind the shower curtain because it could have been assumed they fled on foot and were still in the area, especially with how long the helicopters have been here. I agree the schools are the other way, but if they were scared they could have went to take hostages. Ever heard of a U-turn. I think Clayton and the media could have kept us more informed.

Sorry but I still think the schools should have been locked down. The wooded area east of the bank is my yard! There are "woods" all the way between here and both schools. The highway patrol helicopter was hovering over my yard and I had no idea what was going on yet I knew there was a bear on the loose in Garner because WRAL was "teasing" about it during commercial breaks....Fail on WRAL for not reporting on the armed gunmen in my neighborhood until the noon news!

Wow, I beat WRAL by about eight minutes with the description update.

luvmeezerstoo, if the suspects fled in the opposite direction and were believed to have left the area in a car, there would certainly be no need to "lockdown" those schools which are a fair distance from the bank anyway. (The bear in Garner was on the school property - an entirely different set of circumstances.)

    Here you go from WTSB:

Police described the two suspects as black males with light complexion. The first suspect was 5 foot 10, with a stocky build. He was wearing a black hooded pullover. The second suspect was about 6 feet tall, with an average build. He was wearing a camouflage jacket. Both were wearing black ski masks.

Chief Allen said both robbery suspects were seen running towards a wooded area on the east side of the bank. Police believe the suspect may have had a getaway car parked nearby. Authorities are searching for a burgundy 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora seen leaving the area of the bank and would like to question the occupants of the vehicle. Clayton Police are being assisted by the FBI and NC Highway Patrol.

Anyone having information about the robbery is asked to call the Clayton Police Department at 919-553-4611 or Clayton Crime Stoppers tip line at 919-359-TIPZ (8479).

Once caught, the courts should give them both 20 years in prison.

    Should have Armed Bank Tellers.

"No one was injured in the robbery."

And no one saw the robbers so no one can give even the slightest description of the suspects.

I like how the Coastal Federal CU operates off of Page Rd - the tellers and staff are in the back room, you talk to them over a telephone and computer screen, and the money comes through a machine too - SO much safer!
