— Rocky Mount police are investigating a Monday night robbery in which two gunmen fired several shots and beat a store clerk with a handgun.

Two masked gunmen entered the City Dollar store at 1428 S. Church St. at about 9:45 p.m. and demanded money from the register, police said. One fired three shots in the store as they cleared out the register, police said.

The robbers forced one of two clerks in the store to open the store's safe, and one of them struck the clerk several times on the head with the butt of a handgun, police said.

The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of money and cigarettes from the store, as well as a clerk's wallet, car keys, store keys and a diamond ring, police said. One of the two employees told police the robbers drove off in a dark-colored sedan.

One robber is described as a black man, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and 170 pounds. He was wearing a black hat, black shirt, black pants, a mask and gloves and was carrying a .380-caliber handgun. The other robber was described as a black man, about 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. He was wearing a blue toboggan, black shirt, black pants, a mask and gloves.

The clerk who was beaten was taken to Nash General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

This is not WRAL just reporting on RMT. I grew up & lived there until little over a year ago. Crime is out of control in RMT and the police are helpless to do anything about it. Moving was the best thing I could have done. This is three shooting in 3 days and these are the ones reported. Trust me this has nothing to do with the media.

What is up with Rocky Mount?

They can pistol-whip me anytime they want to... but they'll have to hold my pistol to do it.

  • killing_me_softly Dec 29, 2009

Their crime rate very well may be down.

Once again, I score with "Guess That City". It's a shame to know where it happens before I click on the headlines.

Wasn't it in the news last month where Chief Manley and Captain Fahnestock reported that crime was down in Rocky Mount. Oh well if they say so ! Wonder if they would take a lie detector test ?

Again, the very same activity exists in Raleigh; daily. We just don't here about it on the news. Never said a word about WRAL having to do with the crime in RM. The truth of the matter is as I stated earlier. Have you noticed that Durham is not in the spotlight anymore? Nothing has changed in Durham; nothing. Like I said, I knew where the story took place before I read it because you can see the obvious reporting pattern when it comes to Rocky Mount. I know Rocy Mount. I don't live in Rocky Mount, but I promise you, the crime you are reading about now is not a spree. In a little while RM will be forgotten and we will be off on another city, disgusted by their "crime spree".

WRAL hanging out in RM has nothing to do with the crime spree. This has been going on for sometime now and people around here see no end in sight. The gangs are about to over run RM completely because they know the police force here has absolutely no way of controlling them. And when they are arrested and locked up they are back out on the street before the ink dries thanks to our court systems. There really is no safe place in RM anymore. And people wonder why communities fight annexation into RM.
