RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police have arrested and charged a woman with murder after they say she intentionally got into a wreck and hit a tree.

Lisa Howard Leak, 40, of Peyton Street in Raleigh, drove off of Chapanoke Road, cut through a grassy area and a parking lot and ran over a soccer goal before slamming into a pine tree on Aug. 12, according to a police accident report.

The vehicle was going at 35 mph but accelerated and hit the tree at 50 mph, the report states.

Passenger Amy Pauline Chukwu, 59, of Peyton Street, was killed, and Leak and the two back-seat passengers Alexia Shamira Mae Wall, 17, and Erica Jeannette Freeman, 39, were injured.

Leak was arrested on Sunday after she was released from WakeMed. In addition to the murder charge, she is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, police said.

Leak was being held without bond at the Wake County jail on Monday.
