GRESHAM, OR — A Portland woman died at the hospital after she was assaulted by her boyfriend, according to police.
Shay Martinez, 29, arrived at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center with numerous traumatic injuries early Sunday morning.
Due to the severity of her injuries, she was taken by ambulance to the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center intensive care unit for further treatment.
Court documents state the doctor treating Martinez described her injuries as "significant and horrific," including brain bleeding on her left frontal lobe.
Police said Martinez died from her injuries Tuesday morning.
Gresham Police Department detectives conducted numerous interviews Monday leading to the arrest of 30-year-old Jose Funes of Gresham.
Court documents state Funes had multiple explanations for the injuries to Martinez. He eventually said he threw her across his bedroom and she landed on her face, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The affidavit states Funes told police he put her back in bed at 5 a.m., didn't check on her until 3 p.m. and then decided to take her to the hospital at 10 p.m.
A roommate told police he heard something hit the wall and loud banging noises, as well as Martinez crying, and then after about two minutes everything went silent.
Police said Funes and Martinez were in a relationship for about a year. Funes does not have any prior arrests or convictions on his adult record, according to court documents.
Funes was initially booked into the Multnomah County Jail on the charge of first-degree domestic violence assault. Investigators have notified the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office of Martinez's death for consideration of updated or additional charges.
Funes had bail set at $250,000.
Investigators would like to talk to anyone who was with Martinez or Funes on Saturday or Sunday. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 503-618-2719.
