Khai Daugherty and Annaliese Renae Petersen

— Two Raleigh teens have been charged with animal cruelty after police found a dog had been drowned in an apartment complex swimming pool last week.

A Raleigh Police Department animal control officer was dispatched to the Bexley at Brier Creek complex, at 8300 Stonebrook Terrace, on Friday morning about a dead dog, police said Monday. The officer and other investigators determined the dog had been beaten and then drowned in the complex's pool Thursday night.

Khai Daugherty, 19, of 10311 Crestgate Terrace, and Annaliese Renae Petersen, 19, of 8333 Martello Lane, were each charged with one felony count of animal cruelty. Peterson was released after posting a $3,000 bond, while Daugherty's bond was set Monday at $10,000.

Police said the dog was a black Labrador mixed breed, but they don't know its age. It's unclear from the warrants who owned the dog.

North Carolina should recover from significant material malicious acts against animals, by funding significant material feats of mercy in animal welfare. I say each of them should pay 10K directly to Wake County animal shelters, plus court fees to Wake County, and serve 200 hours of community service each at Wake County animal shelters. Or prison, their choice.

While it doesn't say for sure, the difference in the amount of bond is a clue that Camille may be on the right track. Again, no excuse.
