DURHAM, N.C. — A police officer was struck by an SUV Monday morning while directing traffic at Durham Academy Middle School.

Lt. J.A. Friedrick was in the center lane outside the school, at 3116 Academy Road, and was wearing his traffic vest when he was hit by a 2017 Land Rover at about 8:15 a.m., police said.

The Land Rover's driver, Kelly Moore, was making a left turn from the right turn lane when she struck Friedrick, who had his back turned to her, police said. He was knocked to the ground and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Moore told police she was blinded by the sun and did not see Friedrick. She has been cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid colliding with a pedestrian.
