FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 23-year-old motorcyclist died early Thursday morning in Fayetteville after the driver of an SUV traveling the opposite direction drifted into oncoming traffic and crashed into the rider.

Fayetteville police responded around 1:12 a.m. to Cliffdale Road near the intersection with Overton Place. Police said a Jeep Cherokee driven by Bridgette Senkbeil, 28, of Sanford, was traveling east on Cliffdale Road when it crossed into the westbound lane, where the motorcyclist was riding.

Senkbeil was not injured, police said, but Kenneth Newsom, of Fayetteville, died as a result of his injuries.

Senkbeil has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and a left of center lane violation.

No other information about the wreck has been released, but an investigation is ongoing.
