DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police arrested a man they say hit a cruiser with a golf club outside a substation in The Shoppes of Lakewood Thursday afternoon.

A man stole a golf club from a thrift store in the shopping center and walked over to the marked car outside Durham Police Substation 3, 2000 Chapel Hill Road, around 1:30 p.m., police said. He smashed in the cruiser's back window and two passenger-side windows.

"He decided to go golfing on our patrol car," Lt. Robert McLaughlin said.

Witnesses gave a detailed suspect description, and officers quickly arrested Wilfredo Landa Rodriguez, 23, nearby in the 1700 block of Gunter Street.

Police charged Rodriguez with misdemeanor larceny and damage to property.

He was upset at a confrontation with police over an incident Wednesday night, McLaughlin said.
