Posted November 13, 2008

— A man burned last week while trying to steal copper at a power substation has died from his injuries, police said.

Stanley Richardson, 49, of Durham, died Wednesday at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Officers were dispatched to the Duke Energy power substation, near Ashe Street and Hoover Road, at 9:48 a.m. Nov. 6. When they arrived, they found Richardson, who had been severely burned over much of his body.

He was transported to Duke University Hospital and then to UNC Hospitals.

Officers said they found evidence that indicated Richardson was trying to steal copper from the substation.

A person lost their life and most posts are saying he deserved it, karma, etc. He may have been a petty thief but he does have family and friends who will be suffering his loss. Where is a little compassion? His life is worth more than all the copper in the world. It's a shame he didn't have a chance to possibly turn his life around. That we will never know.

This is so unfortunate. It would be a nice, symbolic gesture if they put some copper in his coffin for the viewing. Say, a handful of copper pennies or something for him to have in the here-after.
