Rocky Mount, N.C. — Rocky Mount police said that a 63-year-old man twice shot a woman he was dating, then shot and killed himself Saturday night.
Officers were called out to a shooting at 109 Stewart Court around 11:30 p.m., police said. Outside the residence, they found Jackie Wiggins, 59, who had been shot in the leg and elbow.
While they were helping Wiggins, officers heard more shots fired inside the residence. Police said they found Marshall Fleming, who had shot himself in the upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wiggins was transported to Nash General Hospital, then transferred to Pitt Memorial Regional Hospital in Greenville. She was in fair condition early Sunday afternoon.
Wiggins is a member of MOMS (Murdered or Missing Sisters), a group formed by families and friends of nine African-American women with shared characteristics who have disappeared from Rocky Mount over the past five years. Her daughter, Jackie Thorpe, was found dead Aug. 17, 2007, behind a house on Seven Bridges Road in a rural part of Edgecombe county.
