LUMBERTON, N.C. — Lumberton police began a homicide investigation early Saturday morning after a man found lying in the road died from an apparent gunshot wound.

Officers were flagged down by a person on Roberts Avenue around 2 a.m., and the person told them there was a body in the road nearby. The officers found the man near McPhail Road.

The man, who was not identified, was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center where he died.

"Evidence at the scene leads investigators to think that the victim may have been shot," police said in a news release.
