WILLOW SPRINGS, N.C. — A standoff between Wake County sheriff's deputies and a man accused of shooting his son ended early Monday at a home in Willow Spring after authorities discovered the suspect was no longer inside.

Deputies were called to the home in the 6500 block of Hilltop Road about 7 p.m. Sunday. They said Joe M. Byrd, 58, shot his son, Michael Byrd, in the ankle during an argument in their home.

For hours, deputies surrounded the area in an attempt to get the elder Byrd to come outside. Investigators eventually made their way inside the home, shortly after midnight, only to find Byrd was not there.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison says it's unclear if the father will be face any charges.

They still want to get his side of the story.
