Chapel Hill, N.C. — East Franklin Street was reopened Monday afternoon after Chapel Hill police and firefighters investigated a suspicious object.
A passerby reported the object in the 700 block of East Franklin Street, and police closed the street between Estes Drive and Boundary Street.
The Durham County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Disposal Unit was brought in to help determine what the object was. Technicians were unsure about the item or its origin, so they detonated it on the spot, police said.
The remains of the item were collected and will be processed for evidence.
East Franklin Street was closed to most drivers for more than two hours during the investigation.
