Upon arrival, officers found Demario Lucas, 23, of Durham lying in a breezeway. Lucas had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. According to investigators, the shooting happened at a party.

Friends of Lucas described him as a proud dad and a great friend.

"He was a good dude. He was one of my best friends," said Tre Williams.

Williams said he couldn't believe it when he heard his close friend was shot and killed.

"I was shocked and I jumped out of bed and went straight to the scene to see what was going on," he said. "He's always been my brother, my good friend. Let him rest in peace."

According to a Campus Crossing spokeswoman, Lucas did not live at the apartment complex.

A second male was taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the ankle.

No charges have been filed.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
