— Authorities announced Friday that an autopsy revealed that Hanee Heron Byrd, 37, of the 300 block of Hawthorne Drive, died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head.

A passerby called 911 at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday after finding Byrd's body off Meharry Drive near Shaw Mill Road, police said. The site is near the entrance to the University Estates subdivision.

Assistant Police Chief Katherine Bryant said Byrd's body, which was about 50 to 75 yards from the edge of the woods, wasn't decomposed, so investigators think it wasn't in the woods for a long time.

Authorities obtained warrants charging Damien Scott Boyd, 23, of the 1000 block of Vesper Lane, with first-degree murder with a dangerous weapon. Authorities said Boyd was last seen with Byrd at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Boyd and Byrd were last seen leaving the area of Hawthorne Drive in a black 2012 Ford Focus with North Carolina license plate BLR-2895.

Anybody with information about Boyd's whereabouts is asked to call Fayetteville police at 910-818-3468 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.

That had to be an awful lot of trauma to the victim if the gunshot wound wasn't the apparent cause of death. That is a whole other level of brutality. What a beast.
