Police identify victims in Knightdale shooting

Posted July 11, 2011

— Police on Monday identified the couple involved in an attempted murder-suicide in a Knightdale home on Saturday.

Richard Lee Roberts Jr. shot Chaila Janai Diaz inside their home at 201 Hope Valley Road on Saturday afternoon before turning the gun on himself, police said.

Diaz was taken to WakeMed for treatment and was in stable condition on Monday, police said.

The couple's 14-year-old daughter was home at the time but was not injured, police said.

Their daughter did witness this and ran from the house screaming to neighbors and they called 911, I know this because my sister is their neighbor and was outside at the time.

Jbarron, well like I said, if you also watch the news you will know what else was said. So with someone mentioning about the teenage child being in the house and such they probably saw it on the news like I have as well. So it is not someone jumping to conclusions. The whole thing is sad and this poor child is going to need lots of help with dealing with what she saw and heard

LoveBeingAMommy....I honestly don't know ...I am only giving one theory....but sometimes things aren't always black and white and what they seem? I read from another site that she was a corrections officer, so would that not mean that she was probably trained to defend herself? You never know.....I guess no one will ever know. Or maybe there is more to come? Who knows....and yes, this is me expressing an opinion and not factual, and so no one needs to jump me for it. Sometimes things can just get so out of control, but it sounds like somehow this time just wasn't able to be stopped before it was just too late and lives were destroyed forever, no matter who did what. I know no matter what the truth really is, many are wishing they had been able to do something...anything, to stop it from happening. I still, IMO, think it takes two.....sympathies to the child. Hope she gets the counseling that no doubt she will need.

Jbarron, on the news the neighbor stated that they could hear daughter in the house screaming and then ran outside screaming crying, so it seems that she must of witnessed something

I stand by what I said earlier. There is NOTHING in THIS article to validate what was said earlier. It simply said that she was at home at the time of the incident. There is no "on the news" statement in this article.

You never know what someone is going through but I truly think there is a reason why he reached his limit. It only natural to think that his wife may had someway caused him to snap. Still its no excuse for violence.

Yeah I know....just like how all these women cause their husbands to beat them...it doesn't make an excuse for the violence, but apparently we all know they make their husbands beat them.....(this is where that logic leads)

It's a shame that these two victims scarred the 14-year old - she has to live with what she witnessed the rest of her life.

I go with my previous comments....is it being investigated to ensure that the lady having "minor" injuries did not set this up? I found some disturbing comments on another site about this being possible. I do not know these people, but I find it curious that she only had minor injuries and then he killed himself. Also that she is a correctional officer and would possibly know how to do something like this. Again, this is only something I read. The article says "deemed" an attemped murder/suicide, and other articles are stating the same or other vague wording. Seems like something oddly is missing....
