FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police have identified a soldier who was the victim of a fatal shooting outside a hotel late Wednesday.

Officers investigating reports of gunshots found Pfc. Chad Patrick Dellit, 22, of lying between two cars outside the Innkeeper Hotel, at 1720 Skibo Road. He had been shot in the head.

Fort Bragg said Friday that Dellit, of Fulton, Ill., enlisted in September 2008 and was assigned to the base's 20th Engineer Brigade.

His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Medal.

"(Dellit's) death is very unfortunate," Lt. Col. John Connor, commander, 20th Engineer Brigade (provisional), said in a statement. "It is with great sorrow that we learn of his death, and our prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends. Although Pfc. Dellit is no longer with us, his spirit and positive attitude will always be a part of our unit."

Investigators have not named a suspect in the shooting. A Fayetteville police spokesman said Thursday that investigators are following up on leads, interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video from the hotel.

They are also looking into a report from earlier that night about gunshots at the same hotel, in which a woman reported seeing someone run from the scene.
