Police: Erwin teens ran away 'to start a new life'

Posted January 13, 2012

— Erwin police said they are searching for a 14-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy who stole a car and ran away together Thursday afternoon, possibly to New York or Florida, "to start a new life."

Heidi Kaitlin Vandyke and Logan Ray Barefoot, who are not licensed to drive, stole a dark blue 1999 Buick Century from Logan's grandmother, with North Carolina tag SPT-1929, according to police. The car has a broken windshield, and the back driver's side door has paint-spattered tape holding up the glass.

The couple is also accused of stealing a credit card from Kaitlin's mother and taking $800 out of the bank account. Police said they believe the teens have either discarded or turned off their cellphones.

Anyone with any information on their whereabouts is asked to call Erwin police at 910-897-5122, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During other hours, call the Harnett County Sheriff's Office at 910-893-9111.

Kids run away every day of the week. I always wonder, when WRAL puts it up for the world to see, why? Who is the critical link that made this posting happen? Within a week or two they will likely come to their senses and return home. Soon if they went to NY, later if they were smart enough to go to Florida. But someone with some pull got this put up for us to see. Who?

This is just my opinion on those kids. There was no proper discipline with these two juveniles. Seems as if parent intervention was not properly done. Kids and that is what they are, fuss about Privacy. Privacy would not be the only thing I'd violate when I got my hands on them. Wearing their rear-ends out would BE ! It doesnt have anything to do with where you grew up, it happens in every town. If Mom and Dad are too busy to find out what they are up to, this is one of many results. But Erwin Police and other authorities are gonna find them. Once those two Young and Restless ones run out of money and they feel the "heat", that new life wont be so good then. Just hopeful they are found safe.

The world appears different at that age. Hope they are found safe and get some good guidance.

Not a lot of hope for the hopeless when you add foolishness to uneducated and jobless and without family or friends

Once the "newness" wears off with Bonnie and Clyde and things like food and fuel run low/out, tensions, fear, and regret start to turn into panic. At some point they may turn on each other and start to resent each other and one will threaten to leave the other and run back to mommy and daddy. That is, if the police doesn't catch them first. Chances are they've been in contact with friends and someone has gave them a heads up on the news so they're shacked up somewhere. The police should make contact with facebook friends and tell them there is a cash reward waiting at Erwin P.D. ...game over.

You can "run" but you need a plan. I once thought that the adventure of running would be fun. As I said it was a thought. My Mom was right on it, read my mind like a neon sign. So she asked where would you go? How would you get there? Where would you live? Clean clothes..all those questions a 14yr old does not think of. Needless to say that was just a thought in my head.
Oh, at 5yrs old I ran away to live with my Granny - 6 blocks away from home Mom was waiting for me. With a switch...every other step back home I knew she had that switch.

lol... let them go!!! once they get tired of playing grown up they will be back..just hope she doesnt come back pregers

  • archangel44369 Jan 13, 2012

Gee, do you think the two were having sex to come up with such a brilliant plan?
Note to you parents. No it is not ok for your teenage children to be having sex...They cannot handle the responsibilities and such actions and even worse are quite possible if you do not supervise them..Ask them questions, get a facebook account, take their communication devices away..Do whatever it takes to get involved in their lives..There should be no secrets, no hidden lives to tell about..all open....
This is just sad and what's worse, is that these two kids don't have a clue, aren't prepared nor have the wisdom and knowledge to fend for themselves as adults.

Why are we cheering kids who ripped off Grandma, and not in a little way, in a grand theft auto way? This is not worth celebrating. Heck, when I was 15 I took off and ran away to the Florida keys with my 16 year old boyfriend. We took our $81 cash and his *sweet* 1979 Chevette and hit the road. The engine block cracked in SC and we hitch hiked the rest of the way to Key Largo. Had my parents not had an all points bulletin out for me, I'd probably be dead by now. To this day, now as an adult and mother of two, I feel so terrible for my selfish act and all that I put my parents through, and for what? I got into a small argument with my father, and a pipe dream of running away came to fruition when I ran it by my stupid boyfriend who thought it'd be a great idea.

I can only hope I'm raising kids who won't do something so selfish and ignorant.

    "They held each other tight
As they drove on through the night, they were so exited
We got but one shot of life
Let's take it while we're still not afraid

    Because life is so brief
And time is a thief, when you're undecided
And like a fistful of sand
It can slip right through your hands"....Rod Stewart
