DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man was arrested Friday and charged in connection with the January death of an 18-year-old woman.
Eliseo Verver Gonzalez, 38, was charged with murder in the death of Alondra Gonzalez Mejia, who was found unresponsive January 12 inside a home at 211 Stokes Street. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died.

Investigators later determined that she had been strangled.

Mejia was a senior at Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College and worked at Noodles and Company as much as possible to help her mom and twin sisters, according to friend Yesika Escobar.

"I don't know how she did it," Escobar said. "She had college classes, high school classes and was working. During winter break she was working about 30 to 40 hours per week."

Authorities said that Gonzalea and Mejia knew each other and the incident was not random.
