Clarification: WRAL reported on Tuesday night that Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman would not pursue a criminal investigation into the fire. While Freeman said she had not initiated a criminal investigation, that does not preclude her office from doing so as additional information becomes available.

Rolesville Police Chief Bobby Langston met Tuesday with the Wake County District Attorney to discuss the fatal fire that claimed the lives last week of a mother and child.

Although the crime scene tape came down outside the Bryan home on Roles Saddle Drive, authorities have yet to determine whether a crime occurred there.

"The public should not construe the fact that the chief met with me to mean we had a criminal investigation pending but that the matter remained under investigation," District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said.

Freeman said her office is not actively pursuing a criminal investigation, but they are actively trying to determine exactly what happened. Investigators have not said what caused the fire, but authorities have deemed the fire "suspicious." According to authorities, a gas can was found in the home.

Kristy Bryan and her 3-year-old twins were inside the home on Dec. 11 when neighbors spotted smoke coming from the house.

Bryan and one of her sons died in the fire. The other 3-year-old was taken to UNC Hospitals, where he was listed in critical but stable condition Sunday evening.

"I wish to remind the community that this incident is still being investigated as an isolated event," Langston said in a statement. "There are no known threats to the public related to this incident and the Rolesville community continues to be one of the safest in region."

Another child, age 6, lives in the home but had left for school before the fire started at about 8 a.m., Langston said.

This is definitely one of those event that makes you shake your head and go "why?" There are no life events that cannot be overcome, divorce, bankruptcy or foreclosure. This appears to be a rash, impulsive decision with permanent consequences.

I am confused by this. Feel so sorry for the father and the two children left, especially the one in the hospital. To be injured seriously AND to lose your twin, he is going to have a rough time, I am afraid.
