Police: Couple stole from homeowner group

A husband and wife have been charged with taking more than $200,000 from their homeowners association, police said Thursday.

SANFORD, N.C. — A husband and wife have been charged with taking more than $200,000 from their homeowners association, police said Thursday.

Edward Demond Fowler, 70, of 296 Fairway Lane, was charged with embezzlement, and Helen Kathryn Fowler, 60, of the same address, was charged with aiding and abetting embezzlement.

The couple is accused of stealing about $220,000 from the North Shore Property Owners Association, which represents owners in part of the gated Carolina Trace community in Sanford.

Edward Fowler was the association's treasurer.

Police said Edward Fowler was arrested in New Hampshire, and remains in jail there awaiting extradition. Helen Fowler was released on a $2,500 bond, police said.
