Raleigh police reopened all westbound lanes of Interstate 440 between Poole Road and New Bern Avenue early Tuesday after spending hours investigating the death of a female pedestrian.

An emergency call came in about 7:30 p.m. Monday, and police found April Alston, of Raleigh, dead at the scene. Police said she was hit by as many as five cars.

The highway was closed for about five hours while police investigated Alston's death.

Raleigh police said they are not investigating Alston's death as a homicide and do not expect to make any arrests.

No other information was released.

I don't know why this happened or what she was doing there, but April was a sweet wonderful beautiful person who always brighten up any room she was in and losing her is a sad loss to all those who knew her. Today the world is a little less than what it was, because she's no longer in it. I pray that she rests in peace.

Why was she walking on and Interstate Highway?

It is bad enough for someone to go through with suicide but to go in such a fashion with so many people involved that will take that sight to their graves is beyond me. So sorry for all including the poor girl that couldn't find a way to fight her demons another way. :(

As far as walking on the highway...in that area waking from Poole Road to New Bern Ave is actually a shorter walk if you go on 440 vs walking the dark roads that have no siewalk or space to walk on the side...Sad either way...This is where I live and with this and all the other horrible crimes going on I have been uneasy lately.

When I was in the service we were convoying in Macedonia to Kosovo back n 1999 and the convoy ran over a body(that had been dead for awhile) that was laying in the road. Shook a lot of us up, even the ones that didnt roll over the body. I never found out why the person was in the road.
