— It is down to five candidates in the search for Durham's next police chief.

The top candidates to replace outgoing Chief Steve Chalmers were in Durham Friday to meet with city leaders. Durham Deputy Chief Ron Hodge is one of the finalists being considered.

Residents will have a chance to meet the candidates at a public forum on June 5.

Chalmers, who has been Durham's police chief since January 2003, is retiring at the end of the year.

    ...only in Durham.

It wouldn't surprise me if they gave the job to O.J. Simpson.

What a ridiculous comment about race. That's why we still have a "race problem". And by the way, as for an outside - the need for a candidiate outside of Durham. Remember Chief Chambers? Face it folks, most people from the outside are only resume' building and you'll be looking for another Chief in 5 years or less. Hey, I have a bright idea ... why not hire the BEST MAN OR WOMAN FOR THE JOB? Forget about race, place or face. Deal only with "just the facts".

About time for a candidate from some other race. Since the black and white populations are so close in percentage, maybe an Asian?

"I wouldn't mind to see Chalmers as mayor" - you are kidding, right? Chalmers is so incredibly lazy - happy to take our money - not so happy about working for it.

Whomever--It s got to be an improvement -

I wouldn't mind to see Chalmers as mayor and Hodge as chief of police, they work good together.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Durham, DO not hire an insider (Chief Deputy Ron Hodge) for this job. He's a great man I'm sure, but with all we've went through, we need a Police chief FRESH from the outside. Their are lots of qualified chiefs from outside of Durham whom could handle this job well, and would hold the police to there own set of rules (Photo Lineups). This could be the turnaround Durham has been longing for.
