Police: Chapel Hill housekeeper stole jewelry

— Chapel Hill police charged a former housekeeper with stealing jewelry from residents at a retirement community.

Police charged Heather Marie Gates, 31, of 9513 Gates Lane in Chapel Hill, with eight counts of felony larceny and one count of misdemeanor larceny.

She is accused of stealing jewelry from nine people at the Cedars Retirement Community at Meadowmont, where she was employed as a housekeeper.

Gates allegedly stole the jewelry between Sept. 22 and 30.

Chapel Hill police transferred her warrants to police in Durham, where Gates was being held in connection with other crimes.

    But one question on all of this. She is being help in Durham on other charges. Did she already have a record? DO they not do background checks on people that work with the elderly?

    if she did it terrrible. But when anything comes up missing do we blame the maid? did they find the goods in her possesion?

    Yes, anyone who takes advantage of people who are down and out or just very old and frail...they're sleezy. But how are people like this lady any different than groups who make emotional appeals of afterlife fairytales and then ask for a donation or a change in their will?
