Police: Cary dad smoked pot, kept swords near tots

Posted March 2, 2011

— A Cary man faces charges that he smoked marijuana around his young children and kept swords within their reach, police said Wednesday.

David A. Ringenberg, 23, of 1229 Pond St., was charged Tuesday with misdemeanor child abuse, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Capt. Mike Williams, with the Cary Police Department, said that officers investigating a break-in in the area noticed a bike at Ringenberg's house.

Officers found that Ringenberg was smoking pot around his 2- and 4-year-old daughters and had swords and razors "in close proximity" to them, Williams said. He said police also found 11 glass pipes, a grinder and scale.

Ringenberg was placed in the Wake County jail under a $2,000 bond.

His daughters were placed with a family member, Williams said.

Ringenberg has a single previous misdemeanor conviction for possession of drug paraphernalia, according to state Department of Correction records.

"Ask yourself if you would have a problem with your neighbors painting their mailbox bright orange. If the answer is yes, buy a house in Cary. If the answer is no, avoid Cary like the plague." - Think01

Eh mailbox, no prob. Whole house? Yea, that's a problem. I live in Cary and have no problems. I can even keep my beat up old Jeep under a tarp and no one minds.

"Boy, if I lived in Cary and just owned a BIKE I would be worried about a search of my house without a warrant!!" - tobywilliamson58

"I don't believe that Cary would welcome this type of behavior. Please stay where you are."

I think that sums up Cary nicely.

they should *all* be legal... its a matter of freedom and god given freewill... how you use that freewill is your decision, if you want to kill yourself, go ahead! and btw, McDonald's food is more harmful than pot... you can't compare alcohol & pot... one is addictive and causes thousands of deaths each year, the other is/does not.

weaver52000/ Why not use the toilet instead of going behind the house? I don't believe that Cary would welcome this type of behavior. Please stay where you are.

Jet9192, my best to you and your grandson. If he is an addict, he may be able to get the help he needs at meetings. Of course, some people need to be shaken awake by life more than once, so if he relapses, it is not the fault of the meeting he is attending or the other people with whom he's attending those meetings.

Some people get a chance to turn their lives around behind bars, too. I have a friend who got clean in prison and has been drug-free and a productive citizen for almost 20 years.

Another friend of mine is celebrating 21 years clean today. It is possible to recover from addiction and live a great life!

"how did this turn to a pot vs alcohol argument? Both need to be illegal in my opinion. No one should need them."

No one should need cigarettes either, or fried foods, or Range Rovers. Might as well make them all illegal too.

how did this turn to a pot vs alcohol argument? Both need to be illegal in my opinion. No one should need them. This is about a "man", an "adult", with 2 kids that he willingly put in harm's way by not taking care of them like he should. It's sad that kids have to be born into this type of situation.
