ATLANTA, GA — The police chase that led to a crash on Peachtree Industrial in Norcross on Thursday afternoon began when a suspect handcuffed in the back of a patrol car found a way to steal that vehicle.

"He moved (his) arms forward, squeezed through (the) cage window," according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.

From there, the suspect went on to steal four vehicles and cause between six and eight hit-and-runs in Norcross, Tucker and Duluth.

Eventually, an officer caught up to the suspect and performed a pursuit intervention technique on the vehicle he was driving. That techinque caused the suspect to lose control and his car flip over.

Only one lane of Peachtree Industrial was open in the area around Campus Drive as of Thursday at about 3:30 p.m., said Gwinnett County police Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

Gwinnett police said the vehicle that crashed was also stolen.
