DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University officials said Monday that they wouldn't comment on a fatal weekend shooting outside the main entrance to Duke University Hospital until police finish their investigation.

Duke police officers Larry Carter and Jeffrey Liberto got into an altercation with an unidentified man early Saturday that ended with the man being shot and killed, officials said.

Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of a review of the incident by the State Bureau of Investigation. Such moves are standard procedures in officer-involved shootings.

University officials said they are waiting for the State Medical Examiner's Office to confirm the man's identity before they release his name. Officials said it didn't appear that he was an employee, patient or relative of a patient.

Duke police hope to finish an internal investigative report by the end of the week, and university officials said they might release more information then.

The incident didn't affect patient care at the hospital, officials said.
