Police arrest alleged roof scammer after Walmart tip

Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera said Monday that Richard Scott King was booked in the Gwinnett jail at 3:09 p.m. on Saturday following a traffic stop where he was arrested without incident. Pihera said police closed in on the area of Elm Tree Drive and Elm Tree Terrace after a report from Walmart where a woman told police earlier that afternoon that he was following her around the store.

Officers reviewed surveillance footage from the store and noted a clothing and vehicle description, and an address listed the last time he was arrested, which was Elm Tree Terrace in Buford.

Police last week said King faced five warrants for theft by deception and one for the exploitation of a disabled adult or elder person. Jail records on Monday showed that King was held without bond on 10 felony counts related to the warrants and deposit account fraud.

An investigator found that in 2016, King talked homeowners into giving him upfront payments in exchange for roof repairs he promised to do. After he got the money, King cut off contact with the homeowners and refused to issue refunds.
